What Our Clients Say

Aspects of Assisted Living

Assisted Living facilities have on-site staff at all hours to provide supervision and assistance. This ensures that each resident always has access to care from trained professionals.

Assisted Living communities often require specialized training for their staff members on how to interact with residents and use reassuring communication strategies that address dementia-related behaviors, such as confusion and agitation.

People typically need more medications as they age, and seniors with dementia may have difficulty managing their med regimens due to forgetfulness or confusion. Assisted living facilities help residents manage their med regimens through reminders and administration, but medication management programs can differ from facility to facility.

Assisted living staff create working knowledge of residents’ current health conditions through regular check-ins, assisting with activities of daily living, and scheduling medical appointments on residents’ behalf. Communities often have connections with nearby health care providers, and can communicate next steps with residents’ family members.

Assisted living facilities offer on-site dining programs that are designed to meet residents’ dietary needs and preferences. Some communities also serve and prepare meals in ways that promote mealtime independence. This can include serving sides and entrées one at a time, preparing meals that are easy to chew and swallow, and offering finger foods for residents who struggle with utensils.

As dementia progresses, seniors will likely need assistance with one or more activities of daily living (ADLs), which include tasks such as eating, bathing, toileting, and moving about. Assisted living staff are trained to assist with ADLs based on each resident’s abilities.

Assisted Living FAQ

Because assisted living costs vary from one community to the next (residence size, types of services needed, and even which part of the country you live in) there’s no single answer to the question of cost. It is, however, often less expensive than home health or nursing care in the same area.

The Genworth Cost of Care Survey 2021 estimates the national median monthly rate for assisted living is $4,500, which breaks down to around $148 per day. To put that into some context, the same survey says a private room in a nursing home will cost around $297 per day ($9,034 per month). Home health aide services average $154 per day.

Typically, no. Every state, however, has specific limitations and provisions. While your personal health insurance coverage continues and your pharmaceutical coverage continues, Medicare typically doesn’t pay for assisted living.

Most assisted living residents pay for this kind of care from their personal resources (“private pay”) or with help from the limited coverage provided by long-term care insurance.
